News from China Typhoon (Chanthu) disrupts sourcing, QC, and shipping in China
In a nutshell, a 2-days disruption is to be expected on your sourcing, Q.C, and shipping from China from 13/09 to 15/09 2021. Manufacturing in China should not be hampered by the typhoon Chanthu 2021 but the movement of goods & persons will be restricted within Ningbo, Hangzhou, and Shanghai areas.
As of September 13th, 2021, Shanghai Municipal authorities have stopped almost all rail and flight activity bound from Shanghai in order to protect China from typhoon. It is to resume on September 15th once Chanthu deviates towards South Korea and Japan. As a result, sourcing companies and Quality Inspection companies in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shanghai may see their goods inspection and shipping schedule slightly disrupted.
Shipping from China? Warning issued for Fujian, Ningbo and Shanghai Ports.
Chanthu typhoon will be hitting China’s East coast soon. China’s Maritime Safety Administration has issued a warning. Ningbo and Shanghai Port have both published bulletins informing shippers that operations on the docks would be kept to a minimum for a 2-days period. It is an additional disruption to the ever-so congested ports in the factory of the world.

As of September 13th, 2021, 12:00 P.M trains going in and out of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and neighboring stations are on hold. Train ticket sales were stopped. The earliest train booking available from Shanghai to Ningbo is on 15th of September 04:23 A.M
A word about Tropical Cyclone Chanthu
Typhoon Chanthu originates from the Philippine Sea. It reached its peak intensity on September 10th with winds of 265 km/h (165mph). It was categorized as a Super Typhoon before its intensity slowly decreased to current gusts up to 140km/h (85-90mph). Chanthu is the 2nd Super Typhoon to hit China this year, after In-Fa. The latter directly caused 2 billion USD in damages and intensified floods in Henan province which lead to hundreds of deaths and appr. 12 billion USD in damages.
We expect disruptions caused by Chanthu typhoon in China to be felt from 13 September to 15 September 2021. This adds to COVID-related disruptions as well as high-demand related bottlenecks. Hopefully China is Typhoon prone country. Measures to prevent damages and further delay in manufacturing, QC and shipping from China are quite mature.
